Who We Are:

We are the DREAM Team at NYU: students, immigrants, and allies, both documented and undocumented, working for a common cause.

What We Do:

We work to provide a safe space for undocumented students at NYU. By fostering a productive discussion at NYU about the needs of DREAMers and the undocumented community at large, we hope to help NYU students, faculty, and administrators alike better understand the realities of the undocumented experience. In the long run, we hope to shape NYU policy to better meet the needs of prospective undocumented students and to make an NYU education more accessible for all.

Why We Do What We Do:

Our group is made up of students from diverse ethnic, socioeconomic and immigrants backgrounds who agree that the status quo for undocumented immigrants, particularly youth, in the United States is unacceptable. For immigrants who were brought here as children, the U.S. is their home, their place of residence, and their place of schooling. Despite this, undocumented students who graduate from U.S. public schools are unable to pursue higher education because of financial obstacles and because current federal policy prohibits their access to financial aid. Proposed DREAM Acts, which would enhance higher education opportunities for undocumented students, were shut down federally in 2010. A similar New York State-specific bill failed to be put into law during this year’s state legislative session.

What About That New Immigration Reform Bill?

As of right now, all proposed federal legislation on immigration (known as Comprehensive Immigration Reform or CIR) has to do with questions of legal status and NOT of creating pathways to higher education. It is also important to note that no changes have or will be made until the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate can come to an agreement on the details of the overhaul and the bill is signed into law by the President. You can learn more about CIR and stay up to date with news with some of these links.
